We are back finally! The flight hours were slightly longer this time because we had a stopover at Tunsia before going to Dubai.
Libya is a very unique country, a Muslim country and yet with a strong influence from Europe on its people and culture.
Some fast facts we learned about Libya over the past few days:
-The Libyan economy is highly dependent on revenues from the oil sector. Oil revenues comprise almost all export earnings and nearly one-quarter of GDP. High oil revenues paired with a small population give Libya one of the highest GDPs.
-The currency is Libyan Dinar and the largest denomination note is only 20 dinars. Credit cards are not widely accepted yet.
-Satellites dishes are seen everywhere in almost every level in all the buildings.
-Dates palms trees and olives trees are common sights in Libya.
-We can’t use our country’s mobile number in Libya, they have their own local telecom network. For foreigners to apply a sim card, you will need to supply a photo and your visa.
-Most shops are closed between 1pm to 5pm in town.
-Unlike us when dinner is normally more sumptuous than lunch, Libyans like to have heavy lunch and light dinner.
-Bread is as cheap as 5cents a loaf and petrol is $0.18 per litre!
-Unlike other middle east countries like Saudi Arabia, women are allowed to work and drive a car.
-‘Hello’ greetings in Libyan Arabic is "assalaamu aleikum"
We look forward to face the new challenges to adapt and work in this country soon!
